Have some soup, feed the hungry

West Milford High School is holding its 5th annual Empty Bowls fundraiser on Monday, March 14, in the cafeteria of Macopin School, 46 Highlander Drive, from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

The Empty Bowls event seeks to promote art and community awareness and to help feed the hungry in town. All proceeds will benefit local food pantries.

Attendees select a unique, hand-made bowl made by one of the students or teachers, and choose from two types of soup to enjoy with family and friends. They get to keep the bowl as a piece of art and a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world.

Participants can help the event be successful by buying one, or several, tickets and telling friends and family. Tickets are $15 and must be reserved in advance; quantities are limited. For tickets and information, contact Cindy Gallaugher at 973-697 1701 ext. 7232 or email cindy.gallaugher@wmtps.org.

History of Empty Bowls
In 1990, a high school art teacher in Michigan helped his students find a way to raise funds to support a food drive. It became a class project to make ceramic bowls for a fundraising meal. Guests were served a simple meal of soup and bread, and were invited to keep the bowl as a reminder of hunger in the world.

By the following year, the originators had fully developed the concept of Empty Bowls, a project to provide support for food banks, soup kitchens, and other organizations that fight hunger. Since then, Empty Bowls events have been held throughout the world, and millions of dollars have been raised to combat hunger.
