— Some local residents took a chance on the weather last Saturday and brought their children to the Bicycle Safety Rodeo at the West Milford Family Pump Track.

The rain held off until just past noon, when the event ended. The rodeo, geared toward children in grades kindergarten through five, was open to any age, even those riding with training wheels.

Sponsored by Jersey Off-Road Bicycle Association (JORBA), Team Town Cycle, and Highlands Economic Development and Tourism Corp. (HEAT), in conjunction with the West Milford Township Recreation Department, the rodeo included an informal bicycle and helmet safety check and a graded ride through a short course in the parking lot.

The purpose of a bicycle safety rodeo is to encourage the least-skilled and most at-risk riders to operate a safe bicycle and learn safety rules. Using a well-outfitted bicycle safety trailer owned by the West Milford Recreation Department, the group was able to loan safe bicycles and properly fit helmets for children whose own products were not able to safely pass inspection.

HEAT members met earlier in the week to learn proper inspection techniques and to check the condition of the bikes and helmets on the trailer. With this event as a learning experience, HEAT members feel confident they can “clone” the rodeo for other interested parties. The group already is looking at other dates to run another program, with hopes that better weather will create better attendance.

Some of the participants, buoyed by confidence gained from riding the course at the safety event, went to the West Milford Family Pump Track for some runs.
