West Milford Township Public School District received an overall score of 64 out of a possible 75 from the New Jersey Department of Education for its Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying (HIB) program.

The score was based on the self-assessment submitted by the district earlier in the year, which is required by the state.

Each school in the district was scored on a rating scale for each of the following categories:

HIB programs, approaches or other initiatives

Training on the BOE-approved HIB policy

Other staff instruction and training programs

Curriculum and instruction on HIB and related information and skills

HIB personnel

School-level HIB incident reporting procedure

HIB investigative procedure

HIB reporting

The scores for each category were added to determine a final school grade. The results of all of the final school grades were averaged to determine the overall district grade.

Maple Road Elementary School was the highest scoring school in the district with a score of 68. All other schools scored between 61 and 66.

Joe Trentacosta, the district's anti-bullying coordinator, presented the results to the school board. He said the district has made significant growth through character education, “School of Character” programs, “Promising Practice” programs, training in HIB, and the addition of school social workers for the elementary schools.

The complete report is available on the district’s Web site at wmtps.org. Click on the “HIB Information” link in the lower right hand corner, and then click on the “Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act Grade Report” link in the middle of the page.
