  • Volunteers have been happily picking up recyclables and trash for years in West Milford at the annual Beautification Day. This year, it's on April 26.

Tuesday is Earth Day and what better way to celebrate than to beautify the town. Next Saturday, April 26, is West Milford’s annual Beautification Day. This is a great opportunity to not only clean up the year's accumulated trash along the township's roadsides, but also help the township bring in more recycling dollars. Last year, volunteers collected over six tons of recyclables and 12 tons of metal. That brings cash into the township. And that's in addition to the eight tons of trash that was also picked up.

This roadside clean up will start at 8:30 a.m. and go until noon.

Following the clean up is the annual picnic at Bubbling Springs Park at noon. Prizes will be awarded to the volunteer who finds the oldest, most valuable, and most unusual refuse collected. There will also be goodie bags and games for the kids, hot dogs and refreshments, and much more.

Last year's clean up was a great success and the Beautification Committee is hoping this year's event will be the same. Because of so many caring volunteers, West Milford is the only community in the area that doesn’t pay for its clean up, and that’s because it is all volunteer. Help to keep West Milford a clean community!

This is an opportunity for individuals, groups, organizations and businesses to sign up for their road assignments. You will see athletic teams, school clubs, boy and girl scouts out in force lining township streets as they volunteer to make their hometown a more beautiful place to live and work. Contact Dave Stires, recycling coordinator, at 973-728-2724 or stop by the recycling office at 30 Lycosky Drive, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, to sign up. All volunteers will receive a T-shirt, gloves and bags - black for garbage and blue for recyclables. For residents who are unable to participate on April 27 but would still like to help, contact the recycling office for a road assignment and supplies, and clean up at your convenience.

In case of rain, Beautification Day will be held on Sunday, April 27. Be part of West Milford's Beautification Day. -
