School board approves 2014-15 calendar
WEST MILFORD — The West Milford Board of Education approved the 2014-2015 school calendar at the April 29 board of education meeting.
Calendar Committee Chairman Michael McCormick, principal of Marshall Hill School, presented three versions which were developed by the committee comprised of administrator, supervisor, teacher, parent, and student representation. The version that was approved by the board was selected by the board majority with a show of hands. The board then voted unanimously to approve the selected calendar.
McCormick said that the committee originally set out to complete a two-year calendar, but ran into many obstacles with scheduling, so they decided to submit one year for approval at this time.
Days to note on the calendar are:
Labor Day is Sept. 1, 2014. Sept. 2 will be the first reporting day for staff, and Sept. 3 is the first reporting day for students.
Schools will be closed on Sept. 25 this year for Rosh Hashanah.
Schools will be closed on Oct. 13 for Columbus Day/Professional Development Day.
Nov. 6 and 7 is the NJEA Teacher Convention.
Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on Nov. 24 and 25 which are also early dismissal days. Nov. 26 is also an early dismissal day (day before Thanksgiving), and schools will be closed on Nov. 27 and 28 for Thanksgiving recess.
Dec. 23 will be an early dismissal day, with schools closed for Winter Recess Dec. 24 through Jan. 2.
School resumes on Jan. 5.
On Jan. 19, schools are closed in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Day/Professional Development Day with Jan. 20 as a make-up staff development day (Snow Day).
Schools will be closed on Feb. 16 for Presidents’ Day and Feb. 17 for a professional development day.
There are no holidays or scheduled school closings for March.
Schools will be closed on April 3 for Good Friday, and Spring Recess April 6 through 10. School resumes on April 13.
For Memorial Day observance, schools will be closed on May 25.
June 23, 24, and 25, are early dismissal days, with June 25 being the last day of school.
The calendar reflects seven emergency closing days, but notes that in the event of unexpected closings beyond seven days, spring recess may be abbreviated in part or in whole, and the school year may be extended beyond June 25, 2015 if necessary in order to meet the required 181 school days of instruction.
