Z.A.P. (Zero Abuse Period), C.A.S.A. (Community Against Substance Abuse) and the township's Health Advisory Board are sponsoring a summer reading contest. The goal is to promote awareness about the dangers of drug abuse to the young people. With the nation-wide epidemic of heroin abuse filtering down to communities, Z.A.P. is launching a major campaign to bring awareness to the residents of West Milford. This reading contest is one part of that campaign.

Here's how it works. Z.A.P. is offering West Milford seventh and eighth graders the opportunity to read one of the books listed below, or any book pertaining to drug related issues, and submit a brief summary on what they learned from the book.

Grand prizes will be awarded to the winners and several runner-ups will also get prizes. Z.A.P. urges parents to encourage their children to participate and help them to understand the dangers of drug abuse.

Submissions for the contest must be received by Oct. 24, 2014 to be eligible. Mail or drop off submissions to: West Milford Community Services and Recreation, 1810, Macopin Road, West Milford, NJ 07480 Attn: Marlene or fax to 973-728-2869.

All submissions must contain the book title, author and answer the following questions: What did you learn about the dangers of drug abuse? How can what you learned be applied to help our community combat drug abuse?

Z.A.P. thanks Doris Aaronson and the law firm of Dorsey and Semrau for their donations for this contest.

For additional information about the reading contest, call the C.A.S.A. coordinator at 973-728-2860.
