Music legend David Bowie was not only known for his music, showmanship and acting but also for his two different color eyes. Difference in eye color is caused by heterocromia which is defined as a difference in coloration, usually of the iris but also of hair or skin.

Most cases of heterocromia are hereditary, caused by a disease or syndrome, or due to an injury. Sometimes one eye may change color following certain diseases or injuries. Bowie's was caused by an injury to his eye when he was a teen. There are three types of heterochromia: complete, centered and sectoral. Complete is when each eye is a different color.

Two cats at the West Milford Animal Shelter have complete heterocromia - two different colored eyes. Their names are Pinky and Kensi. And they are both beauties and their eyes make them stand out.

Pinky was released to the shelter due to a death in the family that had her and they said she has always had two different colored eyes. Pinky is a very pretty tiger cat with white and she is friendly and affectionate. She is a champion hugger.

Kensi is a stunning solid gray cat and her eyes are mesmerizing. She is very friendly and is the official greeter cat at the shelter. She is allowed to roam throughout the shelter and always comes to meet the volunteers and visitors when they arrive. Many people who visit the shelter think she is not available for adoption but the shelter usually has an official greeter cat and when he or she is adopted, another cat will take over. She is hiding her eyes in the photo so people who are curious will have to come to the shelter to meet her.

Both cats are spayed and up-to-date with all inoculations and medical needs. The shelter is located on Lycosky Drive (behind recycling). For information call 973-728-2859, go to westmilfordanimalshelter.org or facebook (links on website).
