Help your neighbor, help yourself at the Time Bank

Do you have a “to-do” list that is just too costly or time-consuming to get done? Do you have a skill, a talent, a hobby, or an ability that you’d love to turn into something more? The Time Bank of West Milford may be just the place for you!

Time banks provide an infrastructure for neighbors to get to know each other, and an incentive system for neighbors to take care of each other. For every hour spent doing something for someone in your community, you earn one Time Dollar. You then have a Time Dollar to spend on having someone do something for you. It’s that simple. Yet it also has profound effects.

To live well in a world with shrinking natural resources, we’re going to need to depend not just on family, but on our neighbors, according to West Milford Time Bank organizers. Time Banks build strong local communities through an economy of people taking care of each other. Sustainable West Milford is happy to help do just that by bringing the West Milford Time Bank to town.

There is currently a roster of registered users with both open offers and requests. To learn more about the Time Bank of West Milford, you can visit the Sustainable West Milford web site at www.sustainablewestmilford.org, or you can join the next potluck dinner.

The Time Bank of West Milford holds regular potluck dinners and orientation meetings for its members. Potluck dinners allow members to get together, socialize, get to know one another better, and discuss the Time Bank and its uses. The Time Bank’s next potluck is on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. All are welcome and invited to bring a dish or a non-alcoholic drink.

For location of the potluck or more information about the Time Bank, contact Elizabeth Scrimgeour at 973-874-0322.
