Scribes among us
WEST MILFORD — The West Milford Messenger paid a visit to Girl Scout Troop 4896 at Paradise Knoll Elementary School. The girls in the troop are working on their scribe badge, learning all they can about the different types of writing.
Messenger Managing Editor Linda Smith Hancharick talked to the girls about writing, including poetry, essays, short stories, newspaper articles, biographies, fiction and non-fiction. The girls interviewed a fictitious Girl Scout who just broke the record for cookie sales, and wrote a story about it.
The girls also looked through editions of the Messenger, pointing out their favorite sections and features - like the Pet of the Week feature from the West Milford Animal Shelter, the honor rolls and youth section.
The group talked about journaling and the benefits of reading and writing each day. And while their career goals right now are pretty varied - pediatrician, songwriter, chef, writer, and special education teacher - this inquisitive group of 10-year-olds agreed that having good writing skills will help them no matter their career.
