Following a recommendation from the West Milford Engineering Department the Township of West Milford Council has made requests for a total of $980,000 in financial aid from the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) to partially pay for road work proposed in the township. The NJDOT announced last month that applications for the 2017 municipal aid program are being accepted.

The council on Feb. 1 adopted three separate resolutions with requests for the funding.

One resolution asks for funds for 1.91 miles of work to widen and resurface Reservoir Road. The proposed work also includes storm drain compliance. The road in Oak Ridge goes alongside City of Newark-owned Oak Ridge Reservoir and is a connector road between Route 23 and Oak Ridge Road. The estimated cost for the entire project is $470,000. The NJDOT is being asked to approve a grant for $350,000. The township would be required to pay $120,000 of the cost.

In 2016 the township was denied a grant request for $250,000 for Reservoir Road work.

Another resolution concerns a 1.45 mile stretch of roadway between Route 23 and Henderson Road in the Oak Ridge/Stockholm area. It is described as Section Three of the road. With the total cost of the project being estimated at $430,000, the state is being asked to pay $330,000. The township will pay the additional $100,000 required for the work.

The third request is for $300,000 in state grant funds for bikeway improvements to Cahill Cross Road between Morsetown Road and Peter Road. The work proposed is for 0.74 of a mile. The township contribution to the project is $100,000. Total cost of the job is estimated at $400,000.
