Play ball! Opening day for the West Milford Little League is Saturday, April 22, starting at 10 a.m. at the Hillcrest field on Macopin Road.

The special day also has a special guest - former big league slugger Cecil Fielder, who won a World Championship with the New York Yankees in 1996.

Fielder is known for his power and his personality. At 6 feet 3 inches and 280 pounds, he was built for power. He played with the Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers, Anaheim Angels, Cleveland Indians and, of course, the Yankees. He even spent a year in Japan.

In his six-year tenure with Detroit, Fielder had four consecutive 30-homer and 100-RBI seasons. He also became the first Tiger ever to hit at least 25 homers in six consecutive seasons.

In 1996, Fielder made his way to the Yankees, who were in the hunt for their first world championship in 18 years. Fielder was integral in helping the Yankees become champions.

Fielder is also the father of Prince Fielder, a premier power hitter himself. He and Prince are the only father/son due in major league history both hit 50 plus home runs in a season.

After the opening ceremonies, Fielder will sign autographs for $20, with all proceeds benefiting the West Milford Little League. Bring your baseball cards and other memorabilia.

FestivitiesIntroductions of all Little League teams will begin at 10 a.m.

The National Anthem will be sung by Chrissie Limos at 11:55 and the Red Sox play the Mets at 12 noon.

A nod to the sponsorsEach year, the Little League has a major leaguer make an appearance and talk to the kids before the start of the season. This is made possible because of the generous sponsors. This year, those sponsors are the West Milford PBA, Dick's Sporting Goods, Mark Lindsay & Son Plumbing & Heating and the Grasshopper Irish Pub. The sponsors will be honored Saturday morning at the festivities.

Food will be available at the event from the following vendors:

The Tasty Trolley serving breakfast and lunch

Taqueria Autentica Mexican Food

Russo Brothers Zeppole

Overflow parking will be at the West Milford Recreation Center. Shuttles will be running back and forth between Hillcrest and the Rec Center.

West Milford Police will be handling parking at Hillcrest. Enter the lot at the far left entrance where police are stationed.
