WEST MILFORD — The Township of West Milford Council adopted the 2017 municipal budget on Wednesday. The council was successful in their goal to come in with a zero increase over last year’s tax bill.

Budget Consultant Bob Casey said the township budget expenses are the same as last year, the county budget shows a decrease and the school budget also had a went up some.

As far as the homeowner’s individual tax bills, they will vary, depending on the property owner’s individual property assessments, Casey said.

He explained that a significant factor affecting local taxpayers is that the total assessed value township properties has dropped by $14 million.

Efforts by individual council members, who pressed Casey for a figure of what the small dollar amount that he described would be for homeowners, failed. He said some assessments would go up and others would go down and as a result property tax figures individually would differ.

Although he would not be pinned down, Casey said if there are increased costs on some properties those costs would be only “a couple of dollars.”
