Black Friday used to signal the start of the holiday shopping season but with many retailers opening on Thanksgiving, Black Friday is now starting on Thursday. But the West Milford Animal Shelter is sticking to tradition and hosting its annual Black Cat Friday (and weekend) adoption event on Friday, Nov. 24, Saturday, Nov. 25 and Sunday, Nov. 26.

This event is to promote the adoption of black or black and white cats. Some may wonder why black and black and white cats need their own special adoption event. It is because black or black and white cats are 50 percent less likely to be adopted than cats with fur of other colors.

They are overlooked for a variety of reasons but sometimes they are overlooked simply because they do stand out as much and catch the eye of potential adopters. They need a special event so they can shine and be the stars.

Black cats are stunning with their silky rich fur and black and white cats are handsome in their tuxedoes. Both of them are always dressed to perfection and for any occasion.

Of the 26 cats and kittens available for adoption, 12 are black or black and white.

Two handsome cats, Rex (black) and Ronnie (black and white), will have an even harder time being adopted, because they are a bonded pair and must be adopted together.

To increase their chances of adoption, the adoption fee for both will be $50. A bargain for two cats that are up-to-date with all their medical needs and are spayed and neutered.

The two kittens available for adoption are both black. Sunny arrived at the shelter at 12 weeks of age on Aug. 9, and is very friendly. He loves to meet people by jumping onto their shoulders when his cage door is opened. Geronimo arrived at the shelter at 11 weeks of age on Oct. 30. His two tiger-striped brothers were recently adopted, leaving him, the black kitten alone.

Come meet these cats and all the others waiting for new homes and families.

Anyone who adopts a black or black and white cat during this event will go home with a special cat “swag” bag filled with bedding, food, snacks, toys and other surprises and their new best friend and love of their life.

The two black dogs at the shelter, Emma and Frost will be “honorary” black cats and also go home with a special swag bag.

All the cats and kittens are up-to-date with inoculations, have been tested for FIV/Feline Leukemia (negative), have received a medical exam and are spayed or neutered if over the age of 6 months.

The shelter is located on Lycosky Drive (behind recycling) 973-728-2859 or www.westmilfordanimalshelter.org or join the shelter’s two facebook pages, West Milford Animal Shelter or The Real Cats at WMASS.

*Friday, Nov. 24 – extended adoption hours 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.
