Funds for new gymnasium floors and bleachers at the West Milford Recreation Center were recently authorized by the Township of West Milford Council.

The council action was in accord with the recommendations of Tim Roetman, director of community services and recreation.

“We are very excited about the renovations,” Roetman said. “We anticipate work on the floor to begin in mid-April after the winter basketball and indoor soccer seasons end.”

He said the main gym will be closed for approximately 30 days while the floor is installed and has had time to cure. The bleachers are most likely to be installed right after the floor is finished.

Installation of an “Action Cush 1” gymnasium floor system inside gymnasiums 1 and 2 will be purchased through The National Joint Powers Alliance Purchasing Cooperative with a contract awarded to Mathusek, Inc. of 25B Iron Horse Road in Oakland. The cost is not to exceed $151,565, town officials said.

The new bleachers will be purchased through the Educational Services Commission of NJ Cooperative Pricing System to Nickerson Corp., 515 Union Ave., Union Beach. The cost is not to exceed $42,456.

The companies doing the work, according to their websites, have outstanding longtime success records.

Mathusek, a family business, began in Oakland in 1965 and has kept their single location in the Bergen County community for 50 years.

It is a leader in sports and commercial flooring. The insulator of wood floors has tackled projects in high range condos to high profile facilities.

According to the company's website, these include: the West Point Military Academy, NCAA basketball courts, the Philadelphia Eagles' training room, and a Broadway stage for the Marriott Marquis Theatre.

The Mathusek staff includes second- and third-generation family members and has about 40 employees.

The Nickerson Company has also been in business a long time.

According to their website they have been specializing in education aids, devices and supplies for 60 years and, from the beginning, their work “was always about furnishing a child’s education.”

The company’s humble beginnings, according to the website, began when Don “Nick” Nickerson started the business in a Greenwich, CT garage.

Today there are four offices, including the one at the New Jersey shore in Monmouth County. The site lists the ongoing company goal as maintaining a high level of service by continuous self improvement and growth in their operation to benefit customers and the company
