WEST MILFORD – The owner of the average home is paying almost double in property taxes than they did 20 years ago, according to records from the New Jersey Division of Community Affairs.

An analysis of spreadsheets from the DCA from 1998-2018 show that the owner of an average home in the township saw taxes increase $4,307 during the period, almost double the 1998 bill of $4,689.12 to $8,996.49 in 2018.

Municipal spending increased from $13 million in 1998 to $23.7 million in 2018 while the school district’s spending increased from $26.8 million to $55.3 million in 2018, according to the DCA records of the tax levies during the last 20 years.

For the average homeowner that means a property tax increase of around $215 each year during the period.

That translates to a monthly increase from $390.76 per month in 1998 to $749.71 per month in 2018 for the owner of an average home assessed around $244,000, according to the records.
