Lady Highlanders Fall After Two Shutout Games

West Milford. After two shutout games, the WMHS girls softball team lost 3-1 to Wayne Valley on Monday.

The Lady Highlanders softball team lost to Wayne Valley in an away game on Monday by a final score of 3-1.

West Milford scored its sole run in the top of the first inning, but the team was never able to get on the board again.

The Indians would score three unanswered runs on its way to the victory.

Going into Monday’s loss, the Lady Highlanders were coming off of a big home win over Lakeland High School in the quarterfinals of the Passaic County Tournament.

West Milford (fourth-seeded) scored its first two runs in the bottom of the third, then three more the following inning and its last two in the sixth for the 7-0 shutout victory.

Lakeland was the fifth seed in the tournament.

Natalie Marzalik went 3 for 4 with a run in the game, while Samantha Araujo went 2 for 3 with four RBIs and three runs.

Jessica Perucki had another strong performance as well, going 2 for 3 with an RBI while striking out 14 batters from the mound.

Perucki allowed just four hits in the game.

That win came after another win over Lakeland that ended with the identical score of 7-0.

In that game, both teams were held scoreless until the Lady Highlanders knocked in four runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

Perucki had yet another strong game from the mound, allowing just one hit and striking out 11 batters.

Marzalik gave another solid performance as well, going 3 for 3 with two runs while teammate Mackenzie McGuiness went 2 for 4 with four RBIs.

Araujo also had a solo home run in the win.

The Lady Highlanders (8-8) were scheduled to play Fair Lawn next at home before facing Passaic Valley in the semifinals of the Passaic County Tournament on Thursday.
