Four WMHS seniors were recently named “Commended Students” in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program.
West Milford Township High School Principal Paul Gorski presented these scholastically talented students -- Ally D’Angelo, Nicholas Gangi, Audrey Leibig and Kayla Yuhas -- with a Letter of Commendation from the school and from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program. Gorksi commented, “These four Highlanders are outstanding academic achievers. This national commendation is a testament to their hard work, family support and outstanding teaching. We take great pride in such a noteworthy accomplishment; having this many Commended Scholars in a nationwide program is a strong recognition for our high school community.”
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized through this program for their exceptional academic promise, according to a press release from the school. Although the Commended Students will not continue in the 2018 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, they placed among the top 50,000 of more than 1.6 million students overall who entered the 2018 competition by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”
According to the release from WMHS, “Accompanying their academic strengths, these four students are active in many school extracurricular activities, demonstrating excellence in performing arts, athletics and other fields of endeavor. West Milford High School joins their families, friends and the entire community in celebrating the recognition of these outstanding Highlanders of the Class of 2018.”
