In a Facebook post, Mayor Michele Dale announced that there will be a new grocery store coming into the space vacated by A&P in Hewitt.

Dale said she plans on making the formal announcement during a public event at the site, 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

“In less than one year, it has been my absolute pleasure to welcome Tractor Supply Co., Dollar General, SpaOlogy NJ, Loving Care Veterinary Hospital of West Milford, Weiss Medical, Smoke Shack BBQ & Burgers, Angles Community Thrift Shop, PC Fitness and North Jersey Guitar and Music Center to our community,” Dale said in the post. “And in a few short months, it will be my pleasure to welcome another wonderful business to the West Milford Shopping plaza in the Hewitt section of West Milford. This grocery store is set to bring great products to our community, give residents better access to what they need, and will be custom-built to showcase West Milford’s charm and history.”

The A&P anchor store in the plaza closed in November of 2015 after the chain initially filed for bankruptcy protection in 2010, and again in 2015.

The store has been vacant since that time.

Dale said finding a tenant for the store has been a priority since taking office in January, and thanked the owners of the plaza in her post for their help in getting the new store.

“Special thanks to the Lane Group, owners of the old A&P shopping center, for helping to bring this grocery store to our community,” she said in the post.
