West Milford. Department details four instances of DWI arrests last month.

    In the spirit of transparency, the Police Department strives to release all information that can be released without compromising ongoing investigations or causing unnecessary harm to victims.

    Here are the details of four DWI cases in December:

    Case 1: Driving while intoxicated

    On Dec. 5, at 3:38 p.m., Officer Michael Weber was travelling on Echo Lake Road when West Milford Dispatch received a call of an erratic driver who just turned on to the road from Route 23.

    The caller described the vehicle as a black 2018 Nissan Frontier pick-up truck and provided the vehicle registration.

    Weber pulled to the side of the road to wait for the vehicle to pass his location. A short time later the vehicle passed. After observing a series of motor vehicle violations, Weber initiated a motor vehicle stop.

    Police said the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle was identified as Marek Brzyzek, 49, of West Milford.

    Police said Weber detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage and observed signs of intoxication.

    After failing the standard field sobriety tests, Brzyzek was charged with DWI.

    Brzyzek also was charged with reckless driving and failure to maintain lane. He was released to a family member pending initial appearance in West Milford Municipal Court.

    Case 2: Driving while intoxicated

    On Dec. 18, at 11:13 p.m., Officer Andrew Petrucelli was dispatched to the area of Union Valley Road and Van Orden Road for a motor vehicle crash of a white 2019 Ford Mustang off the roadway and into a snow bank.

    Petrucelli made contact with the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle Joseph Lanzo, 29, of Hewitt.

    While speaking to Lanzo, police said Petrucelli detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage and observed signs of intoxication.

    Police said that after failing the standard field sobriety tests, Lanzo was placed under arrest for DWI.

    He was transported and processed. Lanzo also was charged with careless driving and failure to maintain a lane and failure to provide an active insurance card.

    He was released to a friend pending initial appearance in West Milford Municipal Court.

    Case 3: Driving while intoxicated

    On Dec. 28, at 8:50 a.m., Officer Michael Onembo was in the parking lot of Tractor Supply conducting a business check when he was alerted by a motorist of a white Nissan Rogue tailgating him on Union Valley Road.

    The motorist also advised that it appeared the Nissan was also driving with a missing or flat tire.

    Onembo began to check the area for the offending vehicle and was then dispatched to the area of Reidy Place and Lakeside Road on a reported motor vehicle crash.

    On arrival he observed a heavily damaged white 2011 Nissan Rogue up against a utility pole. Police said that while speaking to the driver of the vehicle, identified a Kasey Spurlock, 28, of Hewitt, he observed signs of impairment.

    Police said that after failing standard field sobriety tests, Spurlock was placed under arrest for DWI. She was transported and processed.

    She also was charged with failure to maintain a lane. She was released to a family member pending initial appearance in West Milford Municipal Court.

    Case 4: Driving while intoxicated

    At 4:25 p.m. later on Dec. 28, Officer Michael Onembo and Sgt. Stephen Herzog were monitoring traffic on Lakeshore Drive when they were alerted by a passing motorist pointing out a black Pontiac Grand Am being operated erratically.

    Both officers began to follow the vehicle to make observations. Police said that after observing multiple motor vehicle violations, Herzog initiated a motor vehicle stop and the officers made contact with the driver and lone occupant, Kimberly Bocchiaro, 52 of Hewitt.

    Police said Onembo took note of an open bottle of alcohol on the passenger seat.

    While speaking to Bocchiaro, police said Onembo and Herzog detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage and observed signs of intoxication.

    Police said after failing standard field sobriety tests, Bocchiaro was placed under arrest for DWI.

    She was transported and processed. Bocchiaro also was charged with failure to maintain a lane and open container of alcohol in a vehicle.

    She was released to a family member pending initial appearance in West Milford Municipal Court.
