Three men have completed the New Jersey State Firefighter One course requirements to qualify for active duty in the West Milford Township Fire Department.

The new township firefighters are Nick Pluta from Community Fire Company (Company Two), Luke Morley from Macopin Fire Company (Company Four) and Jake Weyant from West Milford Fire Company (Company Six).

They completed the 180-hour Firefighter One Course in August, after beginning their instruction in January. They attended Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday sessions at the Passaic County Fire Safety Academy in Wayne.

The course was scheduled for completion in May but due to the pandemic transitioned to online training for several months. During this period the firefighters were given online assignments that were required to be completed in a scheduled time frame.

After the transition period ended the training sessions resumed at the Academy and were extended through August. Masks and social distancing guidelines were followed. Lectures and practical exercises included, but were not limited to, fire behavior, ladders, ventilation, ropes/knots, overhaul, hose applications, water supply, search and rescue, fire prevention, fire suppression and incident command system.

Others interested in becoming volunteer fire fighters can contact the West Milford Fire Bureau at 973-728-2840 for information.
