The West Milford High School girl’s soccer team split its two games this week, while the boys lost its final game of the season.

In the Lady Highlanders’ win on Monday, the team beat Vernon in the first round of the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 2 Tournament by a final score of 2-0.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first half of the match before West Milford was able to score twice in the second for the shutout win.

Riley McGilll and Emma Piskadlo scored the second-half goals for the team, respectively, while Lady Highlander goalie Gabrielle Soreco had five saves.

West Milford entered the tournament as the sixth seed, while Vernon entered as the 11th.

The tournament win followed an away loss to River Dell in which West Milford couldn’t overcome a dominant second period from the Golden Hawks.

McGill scored two goals in the losing effort, but it wasn’t enough as River Dell won 3-2.

The Lady Highlanders (11-4-2) now advance to the quarterfinals of the North Jersey, Section 1, Group 2 Tournament on Thursday, when the team will face the winner of 14th-seeded Pequannock at third-seeded Westwood.

The boys’ soccer squad, meanwhile, lost its final match of the season to River Dell last Thursday by a final score of 5-2.

After going down 2-0 at the half, junior Highlander Luke Milko was able to score twice in the second period, but it wasn’t enough as the Golden Hawks were able to score three more times in the half as well.

The loss gave West Milford a record of 4-14 for the season.
