A Rough-legged Hawk takes flight from the very top branches of a tree along Glenwood Road in Warwick. These hawks hunt for mice and voles in the Black Dirt flatlands, the same food source consumed by the year-round Red-Tailed Hawks, American Kestrels, Northern Harriers and Short Eared Owls. The Rough-legged Hawk, whose wingspan averages 52 inches, will return back to the arctic tundra where it spends the summer capturing lemmings and tending to their cliff isle nests.
