Hackettstown —It’s Christmas Eve and it’s only 105 degrees in the shade. Welcome to French Guiana where an unlikely holiday comedy is about to unfold. The Centenary Stage Company will present an unusual seasonal treat when “My Three Angels” hits the boards in Hackettstown from Friday, Nov. 23 through Sunday, Dec. 9. This “completely captivating comedy” (Philadelphia Inquirer), written by Sam and Bella Spewack, takes place on a tropical “Devil’s Island” where paroled convicts from the local penal colony move about with relative freedom in the community. When three inmates working on a roof overhear that impending disaster lies ahead for the bumbling but kindly store manager, Felix, and his family, the kind hearted criminals set about to put their own “particular” skills to work to rescue the Ducotel family. “Our world is just like yours,” they tell Felix, “except that we were caught!” With the help of their pet, Adolph - a poison snake who inadvertently gets loose at one point - and a belief in true justice, these three improbable angels achieve a happy Christmas for all in the end. The production will be directed by Ed Mathews who is also a full-time staff member at William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ where one of his responsibilities is being the Producing Director of the New Jersey Playwrights Contest. Cast members include Allen Lewis Rickman, Maria Brodeur, Deborah Guarino, Kate Billard, David Volin, Roland Johnson, Patrick Coogan, Morgan Nichols, Merritt Reed and Jeremy Hall. A special Open Captioned performance of “My Three Angels” will be offered on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 2:30 p.m. to assist patrons with hearing disabilities. Derived from Closed Captioning technology, Open Captioning features the illuminated display of text in the theatre auditorium, simultaneous with speech and dialog during performance. It is accessible to all, and does not require special equipment on the part of the user. This Open Captioned performance at CSC is made possible by a grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts in association with the New Jersey Theatre Alliance, the alliance of professional theatres in New Jersey. Audio Description of the performance is also available on Dec. 9 for patrons with visual disabilities. Tickets for Audio Described Access Services must be reserved by Dec. 1. The student matinee offered on Wed. Dec. 5 at 10 a.m. will include a seminar discussion of the history and culture of the infamous “Devil’s Island” in French Guiana, which finally was closed in 1952. Devil’s Island is also the subject of the best-selling novel, “Papillon.” The student matinee series is offered to education groups at the discounted rate of $10 per student. Performances of “My Three Angels” are offered Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Wednesdays and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. (Family Night).
