Vernon — The Vernon Township Historical Society is sponsoring a lecture and slide presentation on the Black Creek National Historic Indian site and a walking tour of the site at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 27, at the Vernon Township Senior Citizens’ Center behind the municipal center on Church St. The walking tour of the historic site will be from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 28. The presentation and tour are for members of the Vernon Township Historical Society only, but anyone can join the Society at the door and attend both events. Membership donations are $10 individuals, $15 families, and $5 senior citizens and students. The Black Creek Site is listed on the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places - one of only four Native American sites so listed in the state register - and is considered to be one of the most significant historic sites New Jersey has to offer. Artifactual evidence found at the site proves it was continuously occupied from the Early Archaic Period (8,000 B.C.) to the Late Woodland Period, which includes contact with Europeans (1600s). Highland Lakes archaeologist Rick Patterson and the New Jersey Department of Transportation found more than 10,000 artifacts representing a 10,000-year span at the site. Interested persons who are not members of the Society may join the night of the presentation. Artifacts from the site will be on display. Participants in the walking tour will meet at the municipal center and go on to the site from there. The Society recommends that participants in the walking tour wear appropriate shoes and clothing for the walk and bring sunscreen lotion. For information about the presentation and walking tour, call Jessi Paladini, society president, at 973-764-8554.
