Newton The New Sussex Symphony will show how several composers answered that question in its upcoming Family Concert “There’s No Place Like Home.” The concert will take place on Saturday, March 3 at 3 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church of Newton. Snow date is Sunday, March 4 at 3 p.m. Ticket prices are $10 adults, $5 seniors; and free to children accompanied by an adult. Tickets may be purchased at Lou’s Music Center, Newton Book Shelf and the Sparta Book Shop. Tickets will also be available at the door. Composers from near and far provide the music for this concert. A selection about Hamburg Mountain, by New Jersey resident Don Oriolo, gets it world premiere. Son of Joe Oriolo, one of Hollywood’s legendary cartoonists and animators, Don Oriolo demonstrated unusual artistic inclinations as a young boy. At age seven, he was playing piano and his favorite instrument, the guitar. By age sixteen, he recorded his first record album. Now an accomplished graphic artist, composer, arranger, writer, producer and voice artist, Oriolo is widely known for his work on the Felix the Cat TV series. Many composers have used music to describe their home. Bedrich Smetana, a heroic figure in Czech culture, portrayed his homeland as a musical journey down a riverThe Moldau. Jean Sibelius’s Finlandia has long been heralded as the signature sound of his native Finland. And who can forget Modest Mussorgsky’s musical images of witches dancing about in Night On Bald Mountain? These compositions and more are sure to delight kids of all ages. This concert is sponsored by Intercar, Inc., and Sussex Honda. Funding has been made available in part by the New Jersey State Council on the arts through a State/County block program, as administered by the Sussex County Arts and Heritage Council and Supported by the Board of Chosen Freeholders. Now celebrating its 47th season, the New Sussex Symphony is Sussex County’s only community orchestra. For more information call 973-579-6465.
