Newton — The Strengthening Families program offered by the Center for Prevention and Counseling is designed to help parents and their children learn how to enjoy spending time together without the bickering that frequently accompanies family time. The program meets weekly for 14 weeks and focuses on enhancing communication skills between family members, and helping them to express their feelings and concerns to one another. It operates on the premise that every family struggles from time to time with these issues, which is why the program is so great for any family. Following a pizza supper, children and parents meet separately to learn new skills and discuss topics of interest. Special groups are provided for children age 6 and older and teens ages 13 to 17. Additionally, childcare is offered for children under the age of six. Any family in Sussex County is eligible to participate. Families may sign up for the next session beginning the first week in February. The program is free of charge and offered in three locations. Groups are held in Sussex Borough, Montague and Newton.
