Sparta area history presentation goes criminal

Sparta — Robbery - The store of C.A. Boss at Sparta was robbed last Wednesday night. The suspects were apprehended but soon escaped. One boldly walked the streets all weekend and departed Monday to parts unknown. It seems impossible now-a-days in that place to arrest, or if arrested, to have the guilty party punished. (Sparta 1871). Local author and Sparta High School science teacher Andrew Bickerton, will share his fascination with the history and development of the Sparta area at the next Sparta Historical Society meeting, at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8. The presentation will include a slide show that will capture some of the history of the area and will include Bickerton’s 2-volume book entitled “Some Early History and Headlines of the Upper Wallkill Valley.” The book features some early land surveys and claims, business advertisements, newspaper stories, tax ledgers, and bits about the area which is now Lake Mohawk. The books, each volume over 400 pages, will be available for $45. The Society meets in the lower level of the Sparta Ambulance Squad building at 14 Sparta Avenue. Everyone is welcome and refreshments will be served. Admission is free to members; a $2 donation is welcomed from non-members. For more information, call Ed Fritsch at 973-729-0644.
