WEST MILFORD — This year, high school senior Susan Wright took Bruce Bialkin’s World and National Affairs class. The curriculum included a unit on Africa and the genocide that has been occurring in Darfur. After learning of the atrocities, she and some of her friends started a group which they call WMHOPE. It is an acronym for West Milford Highlanders Opposing Persecution Everywhere. They contacted www.helpdarfurnow.org and ordered shipments of gel bracelets and T-shirts. The group sold the items in the cafeteria during lunch hours and raised over $2,000 in sales and donations, which went to victims in Darfur. But they didn’t stop there. The group then made a DVD about the genocide. They broke into teaching teams and showed the DVD to other high school classes. And they didn’t stop there, either. Next week on Friday, May 4, from 5 - 10 p.m., they will be hosting a concert at the Teen Coffee House. Everyone is invited to attend this fundraiser, which they have dubbed “Band Aid Rocks Darfur.” There will be five bands performing: Adam Streicher (solo), Still Driven, The Lady Boys, The Rob Deposit Band and Copesetic. WMHOPE is made up of seniors from Bialkin’s World and National Affairs classes and each of them have volunteered many hours of their time.
