Glory Bracken moved to West Milford in 1989 from Glen Ridge with her husband, David, and two cats. Since then, her family has expanded by one daughter, Caitlin, now 15, and four cats. When she is not working in her husband’s office, owner of Lakefront Media, a computer graphics company, she can be found at the local animal shelter. Her love of animals brought her to the town’s animal shelter where she has been volunteering for the past ten years. “When I first started,” she said, “my daughter was in kindergarten and I did two hours, one day a week.” That increased to a full day once a week, and after two years she ran for the fundraising and advertising directors position on the board and won. She has continually been elected to carry on the work to which she has dedicated her time and energy. “I am there about eight hours a week,” Bracken said. “The majority of it is one full day, but I’m in and out a lot. Most of the work I do at home.” That work includes: showcasing animals for adoption, organizing the fundraising events, providing tours for civic groups, and preparing media related materials. The next event to benefit the animal shelter is the Walk-A-Dog-athon, which starts at 10 a.m. on Oct. 20 at Wawayanda State Park. Bracken shares this opportunity to help homeless animals with her daughter, who also volunteers. She said the shelter needs volunteers who can give whatever amount of time available to assist with maintenance and animal upkeep. The shelter is required to clean all of the cages and kennels every day. The animals have to be fed fresh food and water and receive clean bedding daily, as well. The cats get clean litter boxes and the dogs are walked three to four times a day. Volunteers can walk dogs during the evening hours if they are not available during the day. There is a training program provided by the shelter to teach walkers the right ways to handle the animals. “I enjoy it, I get a great deal of satisfaction out of it.,” she said. “And it’s a wonderful feeling knowing you helped a homeless animal find a new home and family.” Baked salmon with brown sugar glaze 2 lb. salmon fillet in 1 piece Glaze/Marinade: ½ cup brown sugar 4 tablespoons melted butter 3 tablespoons soy sauce 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 3 tablespoons dry white wine (use a wine of drinking quality n not a cooking wine) Combine all glaze/marinade ingredients. Preheat over to 400 degrees. Uncover pan and bake on middle rack for approximately 20 minutes or until fish is done, depending on thickness of fillet. Baste fish every 5 minutes. Do not turn the fish over. Serve with a mixed greens salad and roasted tiny red potatoes. Potatoes can be parboiled and then seasoned and placed in another baking dish to cook and brown while fish is cooking. Serves 6.
