WEST MILFORD Jeff Toale’s 15 minutes of fame is coming around for the third time this week, for being in a beauty contest. It all started back in 2003 when the then-46-year-old Vernon postal clerk made a pinky-swear with his wife, Corinne. Jeff’s hair was halfway down his back and he was sporting a full beard and mustache. Corinne wanted him to cut his hair. She missed the way he looked when they met. At that time he had done some modeling and was considered a “Tom Selleck” type. Jeff didn’t really want to cut his hair, but she was relentless. “She was bugging me every day,” he said. “So I finally told her I would do it if it was on national TV.” And he made a pinky-swear. Corinne wrote to Oprah, but was holding the letter while she searched for an old modeling picture. She thought if Oprah could see there was a handsome guy under all that hair, she might go for it. But before Corinne could locate any of the old pictures (which she claims he was hiding) she heard on the radio that Bravo’s Queer Eye for the Straight Guy was interviewing straight men to be on the show. Jeff was working that day, but Corinne tracked down the people doing the interviewing at a Secaucus hotel. She talked them into waiting until Jeff could get there some two hours after they had intended to leave. Jeff was chosen for the show, which aired in November of 2003. He got a makeover, was given a complete wardrobe and the guys from the show even redid two rooms and the entry to their home. Jeff said it was lots of fun, Corinne was happy to have her husband’s face visible once again, they made all the local papers and then went back to their lives. The following summer the show paid a surprise visit to the Toales’ home to see if Jeff had fallen back into his old ways. Jeff’s best friend Mark was in charge of making fake plans with Jeff to get him in the right place at the right time. But Jeff wasn’t cooperating and Mark ended up spilling the beans. Jeff decided to pull one over on the show and went to extremes, arranging his shirts and sweaters by style and color. The guys from the show bought it hook, line and sinker, saying “We’ve created a monster!” He passed the style check-up, never admitting he knew they were coming. At that point, the Toales thought that was the end of it. But wait, there’s more. Two years later he was contacted by the show once again. They were shooting the 100th episode and in honor of that they decided to hold a beauty pageant with the 25 most memorable guests and they wanted Jeff to participate. The pageant will air on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 9 p.m. and again at midnight, on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 9 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. and Monday, Oct. 8 at 3 a.m. Jeff has not seen the episode and is a little apprehensive, “I’m not sure if I’m going have to call in embarrassed at work the next day.” He won’t say how he placed in the contest, other than “I did pretty good for an old guy.” Susan Lucci is the host of the show. The contestants are pitted against each other in a number of competitions. Jeff’s entry in the cake decorating contest “was covered with nuts and dinosaurs,” indicating that the contest is somewhat tongue-in-cheek. Tune in to find out for sure.
