Flight from Motor Vehicle Stop leads to Eluding Arrests
On May 31, 2021 at 3:49 PM Officers Denis Welch and Matthew Lattanzi were monitoring traffic on Route 23 South and observed a silver Audi A8 with Connecticut license plates to be travelling at a high rate of speed. They activated their radar and confirmed the vehicle was travelling 30 miles per hour above the posted limit. They initiated a motor vehicle stop on Route 23 south of Charlottesburg Road. As they approached the vehicle to make contact with the driver the vehicle sped off. They returned to their patrol vehicle and began to attempt to catch up, radioing that the vehicle fled the stop.
Officers Andrew Petrucelli and Colin Beard happened to be located further south on Route 23 and observed the vehicle pass them at a high rate of speed. They attempted to stop the vehicle but it continued south driving recklessly and exited at Hamburg Turnpike where it crashed and the occupants fled from the vehicle. Nearby motorists and residents gave Officers Petrucelli and Beard descriptions of the two Hispanic males. Assistance was requested for Passaic County Sheriff’s K-9 Units and nearby Police Departments who were monitoring radio transmissions.
After a lengthy search of the woods between Hamburg Turnpike, High Crest Drive and Apshawa Cross Road, Amaury Guzman, 24 of Brooklyn, NY and Jose DeLeon, 34 of Brooklyn, NY were located and placed under arrest for Eluding.
They were transported and processed. Jose DeLeon was charged with Eluding and
Possession of Stolen Property. Amaury Guzman was charged with Eluding and Possession of Stolen Property. He was also charged with motor vehicle violations for: Reckless Driving, Speeding, Failure to Maintain a lane, Failure to report an accident, Leaving the scene of an accident, Failure to provide Drivers License, Registration and Insurance Card, Unlicensed Driver, and Fictitious license plates. Both were released on summons pending initial appearance in Passaic County Superior Court.

On May 9, 2021 at 10:34 p.m. West Milford Police Dispatch was notified by Jefferson Township Police of a motor vehicle driven off the roadway on Oak Ridge Road near Reservoir Road. The vehicle was described as a black Honda Accord. Officers Andrew Petrucelli, Officer Matthew Lattanzi and Officer Derek Finley responded to the area and made contact with the driver and lone occupant Kayla Fluhr, 26 of Oak Ridge, N.J. Officer Petrucelli observed signs of intoxication. After failing the standard field sobriety tests, Fluhr was placed under arrest for DWI. She was transported and processed. Fluhr was charged additionally with Careless Driving, and Failure to Maintain Lane. She was released to a friend pending initial appearance in West Milford Municipal Court. Officers Jill Brickman and Robert Kulawiak also assisted on scene.
On May 18, 2021, at 5:22 p.m. West Milford Police Dispatch received a call of a possible intoxicated driver stopped at a Hewitt gas station. While officers were en route, the caller advised the vehicle left the gas station and was driving on a rim. Sgt. Stephen Herzog and Officer Colin Beard along with Officer Kevin Canova located the vehicle on Union Valley Road and initiated a motor vehicle stop. Sgt. Herzog made contact with the driver identified as Andrew Alicea, 26 of Hamburg, NJ. While speaking to Alicea, Sgt. Herzog observed signs of intoxication. After failing standard field sobriety tests Alicea was placed under arrest for DWI. He was transported and processed. Alicea was charged additionally with Careless Driving, Failure to Maintain Lane, Uninsured Motor Vehicle, Failure to Display Insurance Card, Unsafe Tires, and Failure to wear Seatbelt. He was released to a family member pending initial appearance in West Milford Municipal Court.
On May 27, 2021, at 11:53 p.m. Officer Jenna Bednarovsky was conducting radar on Greenwood Lake Turnpike when she observed a black Jeep Commander travelling at a high rate of speed. The radar unit confirmed the high rate of speed and Officer Bednarovsky initiated a motor vehicle stop. On making contact with the driver and sole occupant identified as Michael Maskley, 40, West Milford, N.J., Officer Bednarovsky detected an odor if an alcoholic beverage and observed signs of intoxication. Sgt. Casey Casbarro, and Officer Michael Onembo arrived on scene to assist. After failing standard field sobriety tests Maskley was arrested for DWI.
He was transported and processed. He was charged additionally with Refusal to Submit to Breath Testing, Open Container of Alcohol in a Motor Vehicle, Speeding, Failure to Possess Registration, Failure to Possess Insurance Card, and Unsafe Tires. He was released to a friend pending initial appearance in West Milford Municipal Court. Officer Lewis Rose and Nicholas Lisa also assisted on scene.
On May 29, 2021, at 8:43 p.m., Officers James McMahon and Brenden Gerity were patrolling Route 23 North when they observed a red Jeep Cherokee make a right turn onto Cross Road into the oncoming lane of traffic almost striking another vehicle. They stopped briefly to check on the driver of that car as the Jeep continued down Cross Road. After checking on the driver of the other vehicle they attempted to locate the Jeep in question. While checking the area, West Milford Police Dispatch was contacted and advised that the Jeep Cherokee was back on Route 23 North and driving erratically. Officers McMahon and Gerity located the vehicle as it was being parked in the lot of Ichiban Wok and Sushi. Officers made contact with the driver and lone occupant Daniel Henderson 73, of Hamburg, N.J.
While speaking to Henderson they detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage and observed signs of intoxication. Officers Jonathan Bregman and Jared Primavera arrived on scene to assist and observed open containers of alcohol in the center console. After failing standard field sobriety tests Henderson was placed under arrest for DWI. He was transported and processed. Henderson was charged additionally with Reckless Driving, Open Container of Alcohol in a Motor Vehicle, Failure to Possess Insurance Card, Obstructed View, and Failure to wear Seatbelt. Henderson was released to a family member pending initial appearance in West Milford Municipal Court. Officer Michael Weber also assisted.
