To the editor, Never was the cliché that there are two sides to every story more appropriate than in your piece “Board of education starts budget process for next year (1/19).” According to the story at least two members of the West Milford board of education oppose a bill in the state legislature that would add oversight of local boards through creation of an executive superintendent of county schools. Among other things, the executive superintendent would have the power to veto local budgets and apparently the two West Milford board members think that’s a bad thing, according to your story. The flip side of the story? The position of county superintendent of schools already exists and although it most often has been filled by overpaid do-nothings I can’t recall any member of the West Milford board of education ever speaking out publicly and saying that it was a waste of taxpayer money. Now that the legislature is considering giving county superintendents some clout that could benefit taxpayers, though, West Milford officials oppose it. How typical. With West Milford’s board of education starting its budget process for the 2007-2008 school year, now is a good time for township residents to attend board meetings and let board members know that they are sick and tired of being treated as if they are an ATM. If you do go I caution you, though, keep one hand on your wallet. Martin O’Shea Stockholm, NJ
