To the editor: At the July 4th fireworks at Jungle Habitat grounds, West Milford Mayor Joe DiDonato was eloquent in his simplicity and brevity. He stated we are gathered here tonight to celebrate the birth of our country and then asked everyone to stand and say the pledge of allegiance to our flag and sing our national anthem. Afterwards the applause was like a roar which made my heart swell, proud to be standing amongst my neighbors honoring my country. The night was complimented by many volunteers parking cars and directing traffic. Among them were our elected officials Democrats and Republicans working together to make the evening special. Then my mind drifted to Martin O’Shea. In a nation that has more rights and freedom than any other he has been a constant complainer. O’Shea has put on a noble face arguing for the people’s rights, but has finally proved what he really values is not rights of others, but privileges for himself. O’Shea filed a law suit against the Township of West Milford because he felt the cost of copies of public documents 70 cents (they can be viewed for free) deprived him of his rights. I wished to debate O’Shea, but he declined. So I filed a motion of Amicus Curiae to be allowed to enter the case as a friend of the court and file a brief. O’Shea’s lawyer argued I did not have the right to enter the case. In other words, O’Shea has the right to continually bring our institutions to court to argue for his rights, but attempts to deny me my right of free speech in the same court of law. O’Shea has been a journalist for over 40 years, a profession that holds the right of free speech paramount and even sacred. By attempting to deny me my right of free speech he had betrayed his profession but more than this he has lost the right to be taken seriously. Note: The court ruled in my favor, I will be able to file a brief. A copy of my motion, OShea’s response and the judge’s ruling are a matter of public record. It is an interesting read. It can be viewed at the town clerk’s office for free. Copies of O’Shea’s delicious allegations can be obtained at 70 cents a copy. John Aiello West Milford
