New beginning for West Milford

To the editor: I have always been of the mind that women are the weaker vessel. I didn’t say weak I said weaker. Time and time again I have seen women in all walks of life turn a dozen men into milk toast. Women are long distance runners and can overpower men without them even knowing. A Christian lady whom I respect gave me a book by Ed Silvoso. It’s thesis and title is Women are God’s Secret Weapon. I tend to agree. Over the years more often than not I have voted for a woman over a man. In business a woman runs my company. I am also open to joint ventures with women in business where with men the thought can make me cringe. My reasoning for this contradiction of practice and opinion is that there aren’t any men around any more, especially in politics. Once I wrote what a woman wants is dialogue. This is not really true. Dialogue is an exchange of ideas or opinions on a particular issue—especially a political or religious issue with a view to reaching an amicable agreement or settlement. What a woman really wants is a conversation bathed in understanding. I wrote about dialogue because the woman I was talking about is West Milford and she desperately needs amicable agreement. In West Milford politics we have had men who prefer to be politically petty, supporting that which supports them rather than willing to reach out to their adversaries for the benefit of the total community. Sure support education, the environment, or recreation and you will reap the admiration and praise of their advocates. It is glory on the cheap. It is easy to pass ordinances and spend other people’s money. But where is the honor when families are forced to leave town because they can no longer afford the taxes? It is my hope that mayor-elect Betting Bieri and councilwoman-elect Marilyn Lichtenberg will begin to change the politics of town hall. First by their very essence to strive for resolution and agreement and second from their integrity and long time service to the community. My hope is they will be West Milford’s secret weapon and the men who they serve with will see cause to seek higher ground. If they do, divisiveness and bitterness will no longer have sanctuary in town hall. West Milford will have a new beginning. John Aiello West Milford
