‘Thanks for sticking up for the aides'

To the editor: First of all, I would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs. Touw for your response to Barbara Carter. I am a cafeteria aide, and have been for going on 12 years, in the West Milford School system. I feel I can speak for all of the other aides for your support of us. We have a tremendous responsibility to our “kids,” and we do the best job that we can. We negotiated our contract, and this was the best we could get. Unfortunately, it wasn’t as great a raise as other employees in the school, but this was the end result. Many of us have been doing our job for many years — why? Because we enjoy the kids and we like our jobs. True, it is in the middle of the day, short hours, etc. But the bottom line is that if we didn’t enjoy our jobs, most of the older aides (like myself) would have been gone years ago. We share so much with these kids n we really get to know them at lunch — they confide in us, and we have fun. So in response to Barbara Carter: why don’t you come into one of the schools at lunch, see what we do — the responsibility that we have in the lunch room and at recess (especially recess), you might think about our raise — which is definitely not going to break the bank. I am so thankful for people like Mrs. Touw who appreciate our work. You certainly made my day. Gloria Wallace West Milford
