Wasting money in the school district

To the editor: It’s a simple fact. When school districts pay higher salaries, there is less money for other things. Fewer teachers can be hired. Class sizes go up. Taxes go up. You would think that our school board would be trying to keep salaries down. Yet here comes school board president, Midge Touw complaining that salaries aren’t going up fast enough. At the board meeting on July 24, Midge Touw voted “no” to a recently negotiated union contract for cafeteria workers. Why? She stated that the raises of 3.5 percent per year weren’t big enough! The union negotiated 3.5 percent per year. They were satisfied with that, but not Mrs. Touw. The Aim newspaper of July 27 quotes her as saying that other school employees got raises of 4 percent, 5 percent and 6 percent. Mrs. Touw wants big salary hikes like this for all employees. By the way, Mrs. Touw has several relatives that work for the schools. That’s probably just a coincidence. I hope that all school employees remember this and vote for her in future. She is representing the interests of the school employees very well. Sadly, she is not representing the interests of the students or the taxpayers. Barbara Carter Hewitt
