AmeriCorps Watershed Ambassaors sponsor visual stream monitoring at Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge

    Sussex - The AmeriCorps NJ Watershed Ambassador Program, a community service program sponsored by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, will be conducting a free visual stream monitorning training program on Saturday, March 24, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters on route 565 in Sussex. Individual s and organization can become part of the New Jersey Watershed Watch Network and to visually identify problem and healthy areas in local streams. The morning session will explain the visual monitoring process and the afternoon will consist of field work along the river. There will be a short break between the two sessions and participants are asked to bring a lunch or snack if they would like one. Participants are asked to dress appropriately for outdoor activity and bring boots or waders if planning to enter the river. The AmeriCorps NJ Watershed Ambassador Program is a community-based environmental service program designed to educate and raise awareness about water quality and watershed health in New Jersey. The Wallkill River Watershed covers 208 square miles and encompasses 11 municipalities in Sussex County. The Wallkill River is unique in that its headwaters are located in Sparta Township, where the river flows north into New York and eventually empties into the Hudson River. This watershed is particularly notable for its scenic streams and tributaries offering fresh drinking water, recreation, and valuable wildlife habitat. Hurry!
