Sussex County — The Sussex County Clean Communities Program will be conducting a county-wide Clean Communities poster contest. Fourth graders from local schools are being asked by their local Clean Communities Coordinators to participate in this contest. The poster will include a picture and a phrase that sends a clear message to keep Sussex County clean and green. Two winners will be selected from each school, with each winner receiving a gift card and having their poster displayed at the Sussex County Administrative Center in Newton, in time for Clean Communities Month. The purpose of the poster contest is to encourage students to act in a socially responsible manner for the betterment of the environment, community and themselves. It provides a medium to educate and empower students to become actively involved in environmentally friendly practices. From a litter prevention viewpoint, young people have the greatest potential in terms of long-term community improvement. The knowledge and habits they acquire about the proper handling of liter and waste will influence their communities for years to come. “We hope this activity will excite and inspire children to become advocates for their environment,” stated Jennifer Shortino, Sussex County Clean Communities Coordinator.
