Byram - Among the courses being offered by Byram this spring is a “Speed, Agility and Quickness Clinic” for boys and girls, ages 11 to 17. The clinic starts Monday, April 17, and runs for eight weeks on Monday and Saturday evenings. The objective of the program is to inspire kids to make physical fitness an essential part of their lives, whether they are interested in improving performance for sports or simply for improving overall physical fitness. Participants will be tested during the first session in some basic skills, including short sprints, standing broad jump, and sit-ups per minute. In two sessions per week for eight weeks, they will learn to stretch to improve flexibility, use running drills to improve leg strength, perform abdominal and lower back exercises to improve core strength, and learn other exercises with light weights and equipment to improve overall strength for quickness and agility. Each participant’s goal will be to improve upon their initial performance and to encourage each other to try to do their best during each training session. Self-improvement through cooperation among the members will be emphasized. Participants will be re-tested at the end of the program to measure their progress. Instructor for the clinic is Steve Koreivo, a Byram resident, who is a National Endurance and Strength Training Association certified trainer. His certifications are built upon 35 consecutive years of continuous training, beginning with his own involvement in high school and intercollegiate sports. Over the years, Koreivo has developed his own conditioning programs to balance strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness. He has coached Little League baseball and Rec League basketball in Byram since 1999. Koreivo’s experience with the kids has motivated him to seek to inspire them to learn the importance of physical fitness, and to teach them exercises they can use to help stay fit for the rest of their lives.
