Newton - Sussex County Community College’s “Thursdays on the Green” series will showcase the Celtic music duo of Joanna Mell and Alison Gillespie starting at 6:45 p.m. on June 22. The performance will take place. rain or shine, on the Connor Green, located on the college campus at One College Hill Rd. in Newton. The evening of music is free and the public is invited to attend. Attendees should bring their own blankets or chairs. Mell and Gillespie play Celtic music with unique arrangements of jigs and reels, hornpipes and slow airs performed on Celtic harp and fiddle, and ballads enhanced by Mell’s vocals. Mell is an award-winning singer, harper and storyteller. This will be her third appearance in the “Thursday on the Green” series. Gillespie, a veteran of the Celtic scene, has performed for many years as part of Blackwater, an internationally known Celtic band. The “Thursdays on the Green” series will continue throughout the summer with an assortment of music and entertainment. All performances are free and open to the public. Refreshments are available for purchase, with proceeds from concession sales benefiting scholarships at the college.
