West Milford Parks and Recreation will sponsor a chess program this fall for students 9 to 13 years of age. Chess can benefit children in many ways. In addition to being fun and challenging, it also helps children develop patience. Studies have shown that the game of chess develops critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and helps with memory retention as well In fact, the slogan of the US Chess Federation’s scholastic program is: “Chess Makes Kids Smart!” The six-week program is on Tuesdays, from September 26 through November 7 (no class on Oct. 31) at Hillcrest Community Center, with beginner and intermediate levels. The cost is $40 per student. Players may move from one group to the other as they progress. Accommodations will be made for younger or older players. For additional information, call 973-728-2860.
