Newton Come and relax and spend A Night at the Movies at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16, meeting of Colonel Henry Ryerson Civil War Round Table. Located at the Theater (D-Building), at the Sussex County Community College in Newton, come and watch a free showing of the highly acclaimed movie entitled Ambrose Bierce: Civil War Stories. Soft drinks and popcorn will also be provided. Filmed in 2006 and released in November, this movie includes three of the most popular and controversial Civil War stories by legendary writer Ambrose Bierce. He was known to be brilliant, cantankerous and romantic in all his life’s passions, and was revered as one of the top storytellers of the late 19th Century. In 1891, he presented his recently published collection of Civil War Stories to novelist Gertrude Atherton and fledgling young publisher William Randolph Hearst, during an infamous meeting in Sonol, Calif. This meeting sets the forum for the presentation of three of Bierce’s most popular Civil War stories including “One Kind Of Officer,” “Story of a Conscience,” and “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge.” The infamous tale of “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” was later adapted into an Academy Award winning Best Live Action Short Film in 1963, as well as a memorable episode of “The Twilight Zone.” This highly praised collection features epic battle sequences, deeply conflicted drama and the signature “surprise endings” that characterized most of Bierce’s short stories. This film is an entertaining mix of history, literature and human conflict. Total length of the movie is a bit over an hour. So come and enjoy an evening of Civil War comradery and movie entertainment. The Colonel Henry Ryerson Civil War Round Table provides educational programs, tours and fellowship for individuals interested in the Civil War Era. Meetings are free and open to the public.
