Newton - Opening night for the “Garden of Earthly Delights,” the current exhibit at the Sussex County Arts and Heritage Council in Newton, drew an enthusiastic crowd. Entertainment was provided by Glenn Zervas playing original acoustic and electric guitar music. Zervas, a local music teacher for North West Christian School and the Bethlehem Faith Center, also is a private teacher in his studio, “In the Key of Z.” Several CD’s by Zervas are available for sale at the council office. A slide show on the “Splendors of Italian Gardens” was presented by Marguerite Guarisco, who described the history of Italian gardens, combining architecture, ornamentation, plants and flowers, and how it influenced gardeners from all corners of the world. Guarisco’s shade garden will be one of eight gardens highlighted on the eighth annual Town and Country Garden Tour scheduled for June 3. The Garden of Earthly Delights exhibit includes works by Roz Hollander, local pastel artist, featuring landscapes and mouth-watering fruits and vegetables. Lawrence Unick, contemporary metal sculpture artist, displays a series of works of hand-painted flowers on trellises. Other works include slate paintings and handbags with garden images, painted by Kathy Sojka; custom hand-made jewelry by Lisa Maglione; and jewelry made from gold wire and Dichroic glass by Betty Leccacorvi. Helping to promote the June 3 garden tour is a special exhibit of bird houses, designed and donated by the students of Pope John XXIII High School in Sparta, under the direction of art teacher Susan Elvena. All works are for sale and will be on display until June 15. The Sussex county Arts and Heritage Council is located at 9 Moran St. in Newton. For information, call 973-383-0027.
