Wantage —Skiing In New Jersey?, by Elizabeth Holste, is a look back at the long and unique history of downhill skiing in the state. New Jersey has a long skiing heritage that includes Olympic champions Donna Weinbrecht, 1992 gold medalist in Freestyle Skiing, and Danny Kass, 2002 silver medalist in Snowboarding. Liz got the idea for a book as she and her friends were reminiscing on old ski hills in New Jersey. There were dozens that she never knew about. Downhill skiing in New Jersey dates to the early 1900s and includes the first ski jump in the state at the North Jersey Country Club located in Paterson in 1925. Bamberger’s Department Stores sponsored a ski train that brought skiers from New York City and Newark to the New Jersey ski hills in the mid 1930s. Later, Cubco ski bindings were manufactured in Nutley, New Jersey. Skiing In New Jersey? is the story of ski hills and jumps from northern-most High Point State Park to southern Holly Mountain, in Salem County. This coffee table book is packed with dozens of photos that help illustrate the story of each hill. As Weinbrecht writes in the foreword, “Liz takes you back in time to the birth of skiing in one of the most unlikely winter sports states in the country - New Jersey. Her book honors the spirit of the Europeans who brought their inbred passion for snow and the great outdoors to these shores. The spirit of these pioneers is still alive in those of us who have been lucky enough to reap the rewards of their incredible journey.” Holste will be at Annie’s Book Stop in the Wantage Plaza, 205 Route 23, to sign copies of her book from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14.
