Newton Guitarist Ed Cherry will be performing at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 6 at the Bula B-Lounge. An influential guitarist in the jazz scene for many years, Cherry has performed with many great musicians including Dizzy Gillespie, Henry Threadgill, Jimmy Smith, Kenny Burrell, John Patton, Dakota Staton, Roy Hargove, Sherman Irby, Pheeroan Ak Laff, Ratzo Harris, Oliver Lake, Mario Rivera, Laird Jackson, Hilton Ruiz, Yoron Israel, Ruth Brown, Steve Coleman and Chris White. He will be joined on stage by Jared Gold, who credits his recent emergence as a sought-after organist in New York City to years of dedication and respect to the Hammond B3. Hailing from Ridgewood, Gold first began playing organ in college, where he purchased his first B3 after hearing a recording of Jimmy Smith’s “Groovin at Smalls’ Paradise.” He received the prestigious governors award in jazz, before his musical path led him all across the world. Along the way, Gold has honed a personal philosophy based on extending harmony and solidifying groove, with Larry Young, Jack Mcduff and Don Patterson as influences. Versatility has provided Gold the opportunity to work with established veterans such as John Abercrombie, Dave Styker, Jimmy Ponder, Jon Gordon, Bill Goodwin, Ralph Bowne, Cecil Brooks III, Don Braden, Adam Nussbaum, Ralph Perterson, William ash, John Swana and Tony Reedus. The music sets on Fridays begin at 7 and 8:45 p.m. There is no cover charge, but a $10 minimum is required on music evenings, with a student discount is available. Bula is a B.Y.O.B. establishment. Bula’s Web site, www.bularestuarant.com, features additional information on the jazz program, artist biographies and general information about Bula World Cuisine.
