Andover - Once again, the NJ Dept. of Environmental Protection, Div. of Parks and Forestry, will present winter interpretive programs at Kittatinny Valley State Park. Programs sponsored by the park are free of charge and meet at the visitor center, located one mile north of Route 206 off Goodale Road in Andover, unless otherwise noted. Pre-reigstration is required for all programs by 3:30 p.m. the day prior to the program date as space is limited. In case of inclement weather, all participants are urged to call the park office to determine whether programs have been cancelled or rescheduled. All programs may be subject to change. Children must be accompanied by adults. No pets are allowed. Owls: Hunters of the Night will be offered Wednesday, Jan. 10, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and Wednesday, Feb. 7, 5 to 6 p.m. For adults and children ages 10 and up. Everything you ever wanted to know about owls will be presented in a slide show indoors, followed by a short outdoor “owl-prowl.” Birds at Your Feeder will take place on Thursday, Jan. 11 and Thursday, Feb. 8, from 4 to 5 p.m. For children ages 6 through 12. The park naturalist will lead a fun-filled hour teaching young people about the birds that come to the back yard feeder and how to attract them. Children will make a pinecone and peanut butter feeder to take home. Winter Greens will be offered Wednesday, Jan. 17 from 1 to 2:30 p.m., for teens and adults. Some plants remain lush and green even throughout the “dead” of winter. Learn to investigate the special features, natural history, and folklore of a variety of evergreen trees, shrubs, and herbs. Indoor presentation followed by a short walk. The Fifth Annual Hot Chocolate Hike/Snowshoe event will take place Saturday, Jan. 20 from 10 a.m. to noon, for teens and adults. Tired of being cooped up inside? Come to the park today for a brisk hike (or snowshoe if the weather allows) in the wild winter woods, then warm up with a cup of hot chocolate in front of our toasty fireplace. Don’t forget to bring your favorite mug (and snowshoes if necessary). Wildflowers in winter will be on Saturday, Jan. 20 and Wednesday, Jan. 24 from 1:30 to 3 p.m., and Wednesday, Feb. 21 from 1 to 2:30 p.m., for teens and adults. Discover the surprisingly beautiful remains of wildflowers in various winter shades of brown and gray, identify them by shape and form, and learn their stories. Indoor presentation followed by a short walk, weather permitting. Tracking the Mammals of New Jersey: Animal Awareness will be on Thursday, Feb. 1, from 4 to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 3 from 11 a.m. to noon. For adults and children, ages 10 and up. By examining pelts, skulls, bones, teeth, and tracks, we will learn all about the fascinating lives of our wild furry neighbors. The Nature of Winter, Wednesday, Feb. 28, from 4 to 5 p.m., will be for teens and adults. Learn to investigate the changes that Old Man Winter has brought to the park; observe how plants and wildlife survive the cold months; learn some rules for traveling through field and forest in the snowy season. Dress warmly.
