Washington , D. C. - Four members of the New Jersey Civic Youth Ballet, headquartered in Hackettstown, performed in the Suzanne Farrell Ballet Company’s production of Mozartiana,’, during the June 8 to 10 engagement at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. One of Balanchine’s last ballets prior to his death in 1983, “Mozartiana” is deceptively simple- looking, according to Christine Talyor, director of the civic youth ballet. The ballet is a suite of dances for a male and a female principal, a male soloist, four corps women and four young girls. In the Kennedy center production, the four young girls were; Mckenzie Cornish of Roxbury, Lisa Krainik of Long Valley, Erin Lay of Great Meadows, and Shannon Tierney of Allamuchy. Kate Gilmartin of Hackettstown was cast as the understudy for the show. The four dancers study at the North Jersey School of Dance Arts in Hackettstown and perform in the Civic Ballet’s yearly Nutcracker in Mt. Olive. The students, were coached by Elisabeth Holowchuk, a member of the Suzanne Farrell Ballet, in the same Hackettstown studio where Holowchuk received much of her ballet training as a student. The Kennedy Center rented the Hackettstown studio for an eight week rehearsal period which began in April. Suzanne Farrell spotted The New Jersey dancers at a New York Ciy audition and asked the girls to perform with the Suzanne Farrell Ballet Company in ’Mozartiana’’ during the company’s engagement in Washington, D.C. Suzanne Farrell also invited the young dancers to attend her exclusive summer program at Cedar Island in July. Farrell only chooses 10 students internationally for the summer program. It was a busy month for the young dancers. The girls performed in “Alice in Wonderland”, the dance schools year-end performance on June 2 and 3 at the Mt.Olive Middle School theater and then traveled to Washington the next day for costume fittings, final rehearsals, and an opportunity to perform in one of the country’s best theaters.
