Blairstown — Gallery 23, in Blairstown, will feature Katherine Yvinskas, a Washington Township resident, and Deborah Mores, of Hackettstown, as Artists of the Month for May. Their work will be featured in the windows of the gallery throughout the month. For more than twenty years, Yvinskas has created art inspired by nature and the plant world. Her work depicts stylized flowers and plants with a modern flavor. Yvinskas trained in Fine Arts at Northern Illinois University where she received her BFA and MFA degrees. She has work in the permanent print collection of the Hunterdon Museum of Art. Additionally, she has had solo exhibitions at Myhelan Cultural Center in Long Valley, Wave Hill Botanical garden, and the Frelinghuysen Arboretum. Recently her work was chosen for the 21st International Juried Exhibition at the Visual Arts Center in Summit where she received an award. Deborah Mores is a self-trained artist who left nursing to pursue her interest in design in 1981. Custom stenciling and hand painting borders and murals in homes and businesses for over 20 years, she produced designs for over 600 rooms. Moving on to designing, she joined a design firm in New York City and started licensing her work to the home furnishing industry. Mores now creates art using watercolor, pen and ink, pastels and acrylic. About her art, Mores says, “My real joy in creating art is the actual doing of it; the time spent in that magical realm where one wonders later ‘Where was I?’ There is very little thinking — just doing and creating and being in flow of energy. I believe that as painters we can touch the ethereal and find the angel in all of us. I love color and magical twists and showing that there is more around us than we think we can see — a joyous space, a cosmic wink, a sense of fun. I believe that there is someone in the universe meant to have a particular piece of art. As soon as it finished, there is movement afoot to bring them together” Gallery 23, an artist co-op, is located at 23 Main Street, Blairstown. The hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday noon to 4 p.m. For more information, call 908-362-6865 or visit www.gallery23.com.
