Blairstown — The windows at Gallery 23 will feature the work of painter Sheila Grodsky and photographer Elaine Smithson as Artists of the Month for October. The public is invited to attend a reception in their honor from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14. A resident of Newton, Grodsky is renowned for her contemporary paintings in acrylic and watercolor. She won the Best in Show award at the Garden State Watercolor Society Annual Juried Exhibition in 2004, and was featured in the National Acrylic Painter Association’s Annual Juried Show in 2005 and 2006. She is a founding member of Gallery 23 and currently serves as the co-op’s vice president. As a fine art photographer, Smithson strives to communicate the enigmatic and the symbolic through her black and white, hand-colored, and sepia toned photographs. “I photograph what intrigues and inspires me, whether it be the humor and social statement of inner-city graffiti, the long-dead child’s face carved on the decaying tombstone in a Boston cemetery, or the fragile, ageless beauty of flowers in a Venetian window box,” says Smithson. Gallery 23, an artist co-op, is located at 23 Main Street, Blairstown. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. For more information, call 908-362-6865.
