Oak Ridge — A film and discussion program will take place at the Jefferson Township Public Library, 1031 Weldon Road, Oak Ridge, on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. It will feature an introduction to Islamic culture by Dr. Stephen Levy, a screening of the Iranian film, “Daybreak,” and a question and answer session. The program celebrates “New Jersey in the 21st Century: Connecting Diverse Cultures,” the 2006 Humanities Festival Week theme of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities. “Daybreak” (83 minutes, in Farsi with English subtitles) revolves around the imminent execution of Mansour, a man found guilty of murder in Iran, where capital punishment is carried out according to Islamic law, which gives the family of the victim ownership of the offender’s life. It is filmed inside Tehran’s century-old prison and is based on a compilation of true stories. Stephen Levy (Ph.D, Philosophy, Fordham) is a frequent lecturer on philosophic, religious and literary topics, including Islam. He has taught at Pace and Johns Hopkins, and is currently a professor at St. Peter’s College and the County College of Morris.
